Someone just told me about this place, I don't remember hearing about them before - https://collive.com/new-eatery-in-crown-heights-will-serve-jewish-food/.

Seems to have just opened based on the COL advertisement/article, though there are some reviews on Google Maps dating back a few months, so maybe it’s been an extended soft opening. Some of the Google reviews look like shills, but certainly worth checking it out.

why are they saying to vote for him over other candidates?

Did you read the article posted? I think it's quite clear. To put it in my words:

I am not in the group, though I'm related to one of them and have spoken to him about this and I agree with his conclusions.

First, to address the most common question: Why not back the republican candidate who seems more in line with the kind of criminal justice policies that would benefit our community?

For him to even stand a chance, every single eligible voter in our community would have to vote for him, which will not happen. If he wins, he'll be there for 6 months before he is voted out. He will also be a lone republican in a democrat-controlled assembly, and he'll have absolutely no power or say. It will be a short victory with no upside. Additionally, he has not made any effort to reach out to our community to hear what our needs are and express any sort of willingness to help. It's not clear he is putting in any effort whatsoever, his does not appear to be a serious campaign.

As for Cunningham, he has met repeatedly with our community and pledged to support our interests in key areas, such as education. He has already expressed that a victory would be thanks to our community's support, so if we come out in numbers for him, we will show him, and others, that ours is a vote worth courting, and our needs and wants need to be considered.

We showed with Crystal Hudson we can turn out and vote in our interests and our silence can't be taken for granted anymore. But many believe that was a one time thing because of who she was running against. We need to show we're not a one-hit wonder and we need to be listened to because we can and will sway elections. Next time maybe someone in our community can actually run with a realistic shot to win.

    Because the "askunim" said so

After reading what @Yehuda57 wrote above (about the Republican) and actually going to vote, it is abundantly clear that this is simple common sense.

It is close to certain that Brian Cunningham will be voted in. The reason to go and vote is to show that we have the numbers and can get out the vote. It's an investment in the future.

I'm going to vote to make sure we see more photo ops, can't get enough of those.

    Because the "askunim" said so

Years ago, I was writing press releases for a mosad. They were doing phenomenal stuff, but they always needed the articles to name certain individuals, who apparently scanned news sites to make sure they were getting plenty of coverage.

"What babies!" I thought. "Who could possibly be so childish to care if they were mentioned on COL?"

Now these people were doing amazing work and bettering the lives of hundreds, even thousands of people. Over time I changed my way of thinking, if such a person can accomplish amazing things, and the cost is massaging their ego periodically, it's most certainly worth it.

I'm not perfect. I do some good things and some not so good things. If getting pictures with politicians is the cost of getting help for our community, so be it.

Believe me, I've laughed at a relative who is "an askan" for his desire to be photographed with certain people, it's comical. And then I've seen him walk away from a party to a corner and field phone calls from all sorts within our community who need his help and connections. And help many he has, in numerous ways.

The state of our chinuch is in a very precarious place. Same for police funding, criminal justice reform, and more. These askanim at least did legwork meeting with candidates and expressing our needs and interests. I don't particularly care what their true motivation is, so long as I'm not going to do that job, I'll fargin them the photo ops and try tone down my cynicism.

I was thinking about what you’re saying as I posted, and you’re 100% right, it’s still an unfortunate reality. The dirty machine of Politics is a “necessary evil”, which the purist/idealist in me will continue to cynically bemoan.

To add, sometimes people push for their names and faces to be published repeatedly not just for their own egos. Politicians and decision-makers are also looking to see who the machers are. The more press someone gets for their activism, the more seriously they are taken in those circles. IINM, there were many times when the Rebbe told shluchim and activists to make sure they got press for this very reason.

Is he going to sponsor legislation to revoke the bail reform, is he going to sponsor legislation to get board of regents out of our yeshivas? The list goes on and on

Or should I vote for him so the "askunim" can take their pic with a winner?

What good is voting for him if he's not going to get things done that the community needs

Because you don't know when you'll need his vote for something which really matters to you. You don't need him to be the loudest voice in the room, or to solve all of your issues overnight. Politics isn't about instant gratification; it's a long-game.

What does it cost you to vote?
What value does your vote have to people running for election?

For most Anash, both are minimal.

Voting today might not bring a massive change, but if you want all those things you demand, then we need to prove that our vote is more powerful then the people opposed to those bills...

Once our vote has value, we can demand things.

And if the personal cost amounts to you seeing someone else puff up their ego... How bad is that?
Most peoples Taavos are a detrimental to society, at least these are harmless, or beneficial.

When one of the "askunim" didn't vote for trump (his words), I think I can tell if he really cares about our community needs.

Let's see by the governor race what these "askunim" say.
