Just a heads up for anyone who cares- Zak the Baker- before purchasing you may want to double check that YOU are comfortable with the kashrus of the place.

I was there last week, it's quite confusing. The wholesale dept is under the OK. However the café is not- so where you are taking your pastry from, is NOT under the OK. It is "supposedly under some "hashgocha" called "Dade Kosher". Go ahead and look that up yourself but you will likely not find much. I did some research and what I heard was not overly comforting. When Googling Dade Kosher, it keeps going back to KM- but it is NOT under KM. I called and discussed with the Rabbi. So- please check for yourself.

Even if they make a distinction, the fact that it's so easy to mix up, as evidenced by this very thread, shows the issue persists regardless.

Apparently they split that hair because they split the hair at ZTB. If anything it shows that they wouldn't certify in a restaurant.

As @aygart said, if anyone is splitting hairs, it's ZTB.

I guess it didn't come out of my imagination, that bit of information about OK not certifying non-C.Y. restaurants was actually stored somewhere in my grey cells.

This can all be easily settled by calling up the OK and finding out their official policy (if it's not on their website - I didn't check).

Meh. The OK is OK with ZTB saying their bakery is under OK C"S.

OK, OU, big deal for milchigs as long as they say it's C"Y. At least they have a hashgocha. Now let's see if they can provide more than 3 pieces of ravioli for $28.

    The bakery is wholesale

They sell bread for Whole Foods, etc... Don't they sell parve artisan Challah for Shabbos anymore? ZTB used to have a great honey-whole wheat challah and a sour dough.

    Insignificant

    -1
It's a step in the wrong direction to get an eatery in Crown Heights certified by the OU, even if the main audience isn't the local audience. And even if the mashgiach is a well known member of the community (who happens to be related to one of the owners).....

    -1
Definitely would have had sigificant foot traffic for brunch today and tomorrow from the thousands of mainstream Orthodox guests who are chabad-house supporters and who were visiting CH for the weekend and for the Sunday night Kinus banquet. An easy 500+ meals over the 4-5 weekday meals that they were in town...

Again, who cares if the OK makes the distinction or not? If giving a hechsher to chalav stam makes them problematic, why would that distinction change anything?

Definitely would have had sigificant foot traffic for brunch today and tomorrow from the thousands of mainstream Orthodox guests who are chabad-house supporters and who were visiting CH for the weekend and for the Sunday night Kinus banquet. An easy 500+ meals over the 4-5 weekday meals that they were in town...
Are you just assuming this to be the fact, or are you around the area during this time (and at other times), with full awareness of what goes on?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

both. but especially after seeing all those hundreds of business suits during the Kinus dancing tonight, we know that these guests/tourists would definitely enjoy an upscale dairy OU-Kosher restaurant in CH with a truffle-fries, wood-smoked pizza menu, with great smoothies, cheesy pasta, wine, and desserts.

Again, who cares if the OK makes the distinction or not? If giving a hechsher to chalav stam makes them problematic, why would that distinction change anything?
The way I understand it, the OK tries to portray itself differently when it comes to restaurants than when it comes to wholesale food manufacturing.

Many have said that having OK supervised eateries in Crown Heights was already a step down, but that barrier has already been broken for a while.

Is there something in the drinking water of that corner, that makes all the Kashrus supervision there go to another level? Calabria taking a Hechsher from Monsey, Basil going certified by owner, and now by OU.
