Ess & Bentch wannabe awning which was put up yesterday was already destroyed (probably by a truck turning onto Union Street).

Lesson: you need to know both your customer base (as noted in audio review above), and your physical environment (don't expect a protrusion onto a sidewalk that is no more than 5 ft wide, on a narrow street (which is a legal alternative for commercial traffic not allowed on the next street) to remain safe).

Not one bit. I actually feel very bad for them about the awning.

I want them to succeed in the right way. I just think they are making mistakes, but I might be wrong.

Did you listen to the audio review to the end? It gives an opinion of what they need to do in order to succeed.

In order to succeed, people need to learn from their mistakes (better learn from others, but it seems like most people need to learn from their own mistakes).

IMO, they will be very successful if they adopt the right model. Low prices where the after tax price ends with a .00, .25, .50 or ,.75. Fast service, good soda fountain, and simple inexpensive food (soups can be a good profitable item).

For people that had the original Ess & Bentch as part of growing up, there's another issue here. Using the same name for something totally different just feels wrong. Just imagine 20 years from now, Dan has moved on to other ventures, along with most DDFers. Then someone opens up a new fancy glitzy site called DansDeals, along with forums. A lot of the content needs to be paid for, forums have a totally different atmosphere, etc. etc.. How would you feel about that site at that point?

Maybe if he can get a picture of R' Yoel buying a tuna sandwich and a pack of Pall Mall, and Rabbi Marlow buying a pack of Lucky Strikes, to adorn the walls, it would create the right ambiance.

I don't really care, but evidently he's trying to bring up nostalgia with the name (which I just found out was his mechutan's idea - he was going to call it Duda's) so let him do it right.

The following anecdote might give you some perspective about my general feeling about (Crown Heights) eateries:

When I came home this evening DW served me supper. When I noted that she had given me a huge portion, she said that this was all she managed to salvage for me, as we had various relatives around when supper was being made, and they all couldn't stop eating. One niece told her husband to stop filling himself up, as they were going to B&B for dinner, to which he responded "this is better than anything I can get at B&B".
