Is Does Basil kosher have a Kashrus certificate (other than the owner's certification) again?

    Is Basil kosher again?

Interesting; there does not seem to be a mention of Kosher on the Basil site: http://basilny.com/

However, on the upcoming "Meat" restaurant, owned by the Basil hospitality group, there is an OK symbol: http://www.meatny.com/

When I was last there (about 4 months ago) they had an OU and I spoke to the Mashgiach who told me they keep to a very high standard.

All I can say is that I drove past Alenbi a few times and it seemed full.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I haven't been to either. What I've heard:

Phomen: like eating tradition soup in a restaurant.
Allenbi: Very good reviews - interesting flavors, but small portions. Others scoff at the small portion complaint saying that Jews always complain about that.

Large portions is the first criteria to even be considered Kosher Style, let alone something that's really kosher.  ;D

I really liked Phomen, although I have heard very mixed reviews from friends. I happen to love ramen and make it frequently, so am familiar with the Asian flavors. I think the reason people don't like is simply that the food, flavors and concept is very foreign to the kosher restaurant scene. The closest people have come to ramen is, as quoted, a tradition soup! Phomen is very different from your standard "Meat and two veg" restaurants. I highly recommend it, but go with an open mind.

We went during the soft opening and had:

    Starter:
    Summer Rolls
Green Papaya Salad - (this was the least liked dish we had)
    Rice cakes

    Main:
2 bowls of the combo Pho
2 bowls of ramen (I don't recall which proteins)
3 Bahn Mi Sandwiches (2 original and 1 ginger)

    Everything was seriously delicious.

Phomen: expensive, and the flavors are pretty authentic, so you won't have anything to compare it to outside of tradition soup.

If you go with an open mind, it'll be good.

The staff and chef are pretty good at educating you though.
