The are too many cars, so the best bet is to get people on bikes and mass transit. So either you can improve the infrastructure for mass transit and bikes, or just make life miserable for car owners. NY is going for the latter.

Promoting biking is a sham when there is no mutual respect between bikers/drivers/pedestrians. NYC bikers and bikers in Copenhagen (where biking is more common than driving) are night and day from eachother. Add all kinds of motorized scooters and mopeds to the list that don’t follow any rules at all, and you get a whole lotta danger that no one is doing anything about.

It's not a change that happens overnight or within a few years. Both sides need to respect each other more. I try commute by bike and have some harrowing stories about drivers which I've posted on this forum already. At the same time, the stereotypical cyclist in Brooklyn is about as narcissistic a jerk as you'll see.

The scooters terrify me. You see kids flying at high speeds, often without helmets, weaving in and out of traffic....

I have a relative who was hospitalized in a hit and run accident by a scooter like that, second hit and run accident for them in 2.5 years where the other party was 100% at fault (the first was a car). So clearly I’m biased, but also, thinks are out of control.

Change takes time, but to me it seems like things are moving in the wrong direction…

    +1

I bike daily to the city. I see both how drivers are terrified of bikers, and bikers who are terrified of all motorized vehicles. At certain parts of Brooklyn (on smith heading to the bridges) it becomes a lawless free for all. The city thinks that adding bike lanes and Citi bikes is going to help everyone. It isnt. It's making more problems for everyone.

If there would be a push for proper education - for both bikers and drivers everything would be better.

The worst are the moped, vestas and motorbike overtaking bikers. They fly by without any notice.

Why couldn’t they not put it on the island that has plenty of space??

It’s almost as if they are saying that car ownership makes you evil, and therefore not worthy of being considerate.

The island is used by the fire dept and ambulances as a backup. Often for calls to EP they drive on the sidewalk bit to block the service lane.

There's plenty of room on the island for the bikes and emergency vehicles to pass. They can put the bikes on the grass.

In NYC that would be considered heresy.

I don't mean to put them directly on the grass. They can take that whole section of grass right near where the bikes are now, pour concrete or whatever the rest of the island is made of, and put the bikes there.

It’s been listed as a future location for a while now, IINM also Empire and Kingston or another local location (probably mentioned upthread).

It’ll hit the map when it’s live and operational.

Why the extended torture? Just covert every other block to bike only or no bikes. Create an immovable mess, and run.

Does ohlei torah pool still exist? Like is there swimming available during the year?

Yes, but it’s very iffy. The pool voicemail can tell you if/when it’s open (718) 778-3340 x 1130 (you need to wait to hear the recording after the digital voice says “no one is available to take your call”).
