as a side point a local merchant once told me he hopes most people dont know that a dispute costs him money because otherwise he is not mochel them. he said very often people make a dispute for not being allowed to make a return even though the return policy is posted

If that really happens so often, can't he take it up with the CC company?

Take what up?

If people are successfully disputing in cases where they should be using return protection, then the merchant should have a tayna on the CC company.

Still get charged a chargeback fee, depending on your processor.

Well then he should still have a tayna. Someone else is messing up and he's losing money from it.

There was a restaurant that charged me twice. I noticed it a few days later, instead of calling up I just disputed the second charge.

Yeah, I always call the merchant before disputing. 99% of the time they'll refund the charge right away.

Not sure about 99%, but it's the right thing to do.

I wasn't interested in dealing with it.

Filled out the claim online, and was done.

I understood that. But it's still not
the right thing to do.

Definitely.

It's very unfortunate when a yiddishe business refuses to refund something which should legitimately be refunded. I recently ordered a case of a certain item, and upon sampling it, it was obviously spoiled. I called the online seller to discuss, and all they offered was a store credit (I really have no reason to shop with them, as local prices are usually much better, only reason I shopped online was because item wasn't available locally), or I pay for return shipping + restocking fee. After several emails without any adequate response, I had no choice but to dispute with CC.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

The only dispute I had on my direct CC merchant was from the rabbi of my shul, he thought I over charged him so he just disputed. When I comforted him he said "you should have told me then regarding the charge" I said I did and even told him where he was standing as I told him in person. He denied that but after reviewing the cheshbon he reversed the dispute.

I was more hurt from the fact he wasn't a mench and just ask me before he disputed, at that point it bothered me more then the money involved.

Lesson learned, I do everything over the phone on a recorded line

IIRC, in the past when you would go to dispute a charge they would recommend that you try to sort it out directly with the merchant first.

In my latest experience they didn't say anything like that. I was actually surprised how simple the process was. I'm getting the feeling that CC companies don't really care about merchants very much.

Anyone have experience disputing a rental car charge for not getting car class you reserved?
I reserved a mid size suv- they offered me either a sonata or Subaru xv, neither are close to a mid size suv.
