Tal Law annuled . . . Now what?
« on: February 23, 2012, 03:20:54 PM »
The Israeli High Court decided to annul the Tal Law which exempted yeshiva students from serving in the army.   So now what?  You can be sure that tens of thousands of Yeshiva students are not about to start serving in the IDF.  So what happens now?

Your thoughts?
If you don't care why would you comment?

The result will probably be less funding for Yeshivos and possibly other Charedi funds.

doubt Bibu would try that as his coalition would fall and an election would be called something he has bent over backwards to avoid despite many close encounters this knesset session....the religious MK's are also pretty good about getting/ensuring funding....

What is the penalty for not serving? Enforce the penalty and move on.

Imprisoning 70,000 people is not going to work.
Rav Shach simply said we will not live here if there is a military obligation. Think about every ultra-orthdox person leaving Israel - 800,000 people according to some.
If they try to block the emigration; think about hundreds of thousands of religious Jews protesting at the Israeli Embassy in NY, calling to abolish the Jewish State and allow us to leave the country. Or a hunger strike by over 10% of the population, calling to allow emigration.

In other words; not going to happen.

the problem is that no country on earth would take these people if they decided to leave israel since no one but israel would ever give them the funding and welfare that they need to survive so a mass emigration is an empty threat.
imo the army doesnt want the frum anyways since they will then have nothing to bash us with in the media

Most countries would like a bunch of western Jews to immigrate, even the US might be coerced into taking them. Welfare etc. is all secondary to this, so we can give that up.

Throw a few in jail and usually that does the trick.

Most here were not even born when Vietnam was going on so I understand your viewpoint. Try and understand the viewpoint of the parents whose sons and daughters gave their lives so you still have the right to express your viewpoint.

The Jewish state cannot survive without international legitimacy, and vocal opposition to it's very existence by a large faction of it's 'nation' will quickly lead to its demise, hence they will never risk this happening.

The reason locking people up won't help (as opposed to Vietnam) is because this is about religion. Ultra-Orthodox Judaism does not support the existence of State Of Israel if it requires males who would otherwise be studying the Torah to serve in the military.

'Throwing a few people in jail' will not bend a huge community to forsake their elementary values.

In terms of overall investment attraction, it is definitely a good deal for many countries.

What ever the case is, it was idiotic of the Supreme Court to get involved in this.

a shame herzl never signed off on the deal for uganda...we could found the united colony of chareidim and solve the issue once and for all.

wealthy kuwaiti families are doing something similar on the edge of africa quietly as there country is majority foreign nationals who work for them...
