Don't know, and can't claim to be able to represent his opinion, but it might have something to do with the fact that part of the reason for these laws and this pressure is a intense dislike (a term I use instead of rabid hatred) for the religious right, and a desire to destroy it.
Sounds paranoid? Considering that there are parties with a platform of destroying any connection to religion, and if you've spoken to people who've served, it no longer seems that way.
People who tried to sign up for the army, and were turned away once the interviewer realized that they were a rabbi (that taught religion)...
