Author Topic: Buying Gas using Credit Card @ Cash rates (Read 37812 times)

This in unconfirmed, but the idea is as follows:
I heard that if you buy GC at BP Gas, then use them to pump, the rate they charge you is the cash rate, not the Credit Card rate.

If this works I would go in buy $1500 of these cards, on my Freedom card as well as my wife.

1)I would have the first $1500 spent on the card is on gas... with 5% back.
2) I would get gas at the cash rate VS. the Credit Card rate.

cant say about bp but at exxon they give the cash rate. was planning on trying this but are you sure they will let you buy the gc's with a cc? i know in SR they let you but they ran out of bp awhile ago

But Exxon's Cash rate is usually higher then BP CC rate.
I guess it can't hurt to try.
Also Im sure walmart has GC, but then you dont get the 5%

It wouldn't help in this case if SR lets, as the point is to buy in BP (gas station) in order to get the 5% bonus.

The same concept works with 5% grocery cards and either way I was just bringing it as proof that the one place I checked does allow cc purchases.

so if BP store come up as a Gas purchase, and they have $3000 in GC, and they allow you to buy with GC at cash rates its worthwhile.
and the same is almost true with Exxon. (regarding a shop-rite "grocery" apr-sept)

I've used a gc at exxon and paid cash price. You need to pay inside.

A friend of mine once went into a gas station and purchased a gc. He then went back out and filled up his tank, then he went back in to pay with the gc to get cash price.

Lets just say the cashier was really not happy with this quick scheme.

If you plan on using a gc, don't buy it at the time that your filling up.

I passed by the BP in Lakewood (Rt 9 before rt 88) and didnt notice a store to buy GC's do they sell at the booth?

They sell in the booth but it posts as an inside purchase - Not eligible for 5% back.....
