My wife's laptop came with win 7, so assuming the same key can work for two laptops at the same time, I could use her key.

Told you so ;)

So:
Just use the key off any old system, we all have one of those
.... means from an old system that's no longer in use?

Yep, if you want Win7, get a key from someone who is currently using Win8 and isn't looking back.

I was computer savvy in my teens a decade and a half ago, but have since strayed from the path .......

In expecting a new Envy laptop to arrive in a weekish with Win 8. Has a 24GB SSD cache drive for OS.

Does anyone know of clear safe instructions that they could link to for the dinosaurs among us, how to clean it and start fresh with win 7?

I could google but don't want to end up in a mess by following bad instructions.

My wife's laptop came with win 7, so assuming the same key can work for two laptops at the same time, I could use her key.
The most difficult part of installing windows 7 on a win 8 system is finding drivers, which if you know what your doing is not that hard.
First thing you need to do is go into the Bios and disable secure boot - turn on legacy boot options. after that its pretty straight forward just make sure to delete all the old partitions as windows 8 uses different partitions which wont allow windows 7 to install.

Thank you very much David for addressing my query. Much appreciated!

It's not possible to have a laptop changed from win 8 to win 7 by a tech with remote access is it?

I assume not seeing as the OS is being changed I don't imagine the comp could be communicating online during the process, but figured I'd ask just incase.

Do you have any reasons why or just catch phrases?

Yeah, been reading a lot of feedback from users that tried the preview.
A lot of assumptions too.  Read this: http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/26/windows-8-1s-start-button-isnt-a-start-button/

I think the forums below discuss a workout around for that.

Once you're using a workaround, 8.1 didn't help anything (re: that).
