Yeah, been reading a lot of feedback from users that tried the preview.
A lot of assumptions too.  Read this: http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/26/windows-8-1s-start-button-isnt-a-start-button/
Honestly, I don't get why people are so fussed about the Start button.
The start screen is just as effective.
Does your smartphone have a start button?
No? Get rid of it!  ::)

Windows isn't a phone - and shouldn't be set as one. Most ppl aren't using touch yet and the idea of removing the start button was really made with touch in mind, otherwise its really clumsy and has a very cluttered look.

Is it just me, or the native PDF viewer on Windows 8 is horrible?

No, its not just you. Any recommendations for an alternative?

It seems that you can't Map the Network in Windows 8.
How dumb of MS to remove this useful feature.

Just re-read Dirah's post.   He meant View Network Map, not map a drive.
Yes, that feature has been removed.

Is there any chance that they will ditch 8 and go back to the 7 setup?

Anything is possible but don't bet on it especially with 8.1 coming now

After using Windows 8 for a while now, I kinda come to like it, and would like to share my tips for how to make the best of it and get that old familiar Vista/7 touch back to it,

**I didn't really read everything in this thread, so if anyone already suggested some of my tips, I apologize**

  • Download Pokki start menu it brings back the good old windows start button, its cool and easy to store your favorite files and programs up there, but best of all it has a feature to skip the dreading Win8 start screen and go straight to your reg. desktop mode
  • Win8 has no good email program, their mail app sucks badly, but no worries, just download Thunderbird mail with so many tools and options built in, its the best and most reliable email program out there, created by Mozilla (same company who created Firefox) and its free
  • Windows 8 is also missing the "Show Desktop" button that minimizes all open windows to view your desktop, I was going crazy without it, so here is a step by step instructions how to bring that back

Just click the extreme right of your taskbar.

Most of what you write was already discussed, including better options for start menu imo.

Or to get to desktop, you can simply click WINDOWS+D

I have Win 8 on my new laptop and really do not like it.
I'm looking to get a new desktop, and am inclined to get it with Win 7, however on a photography forum I was told that Win 8 has a "Time machine like facility called file history" that could be quite useful for backing up the system onto an external HD, and might be particularly useful for photographers that must have their data (photographs and photo catalogues) backed up regularly.

Does anyone know much about this app?
Could it be worth getting Win 8 for this feature as opposed to getting Win 7 and then needing additional software to manage backup of the PC?

File version came out with XP x64.  But you could always use something like carbonite, or mozy, etc which would do the same thing (and is even better because you get off-site backup).

+1. No reason to put up with a crappy OS for that.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.
