This is a pretty cool feature that not too many people know about:

You can create a folder on Windows that gives access to all control options in one place:

To enter "GodMode," one need only create a new folder and then rename the folder to the following:

       GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Once that is done, the folder's icon will change to resemble a control panel and will contain dozens of control options. I'm not sure it's my idea of playing God, but it is a handy way to get to all kinds of controls.
Windows 7 has it too.

IME it doesn't work after rename, but you can rename a shortcut (to desktop, for example) though.

Works for me.
ETA:after some experimenting it looks like it needs a period after any text before the { in order to work

Idk honestly it messes with the Startmenu8 and some have reported Wifi connectivity issues... It does have benefits as well
Can I use startmenu8 on windows 8.1 (came installed)? Is there a native option to bring back the Start menu?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Yes.  I never used that one though, so I can only recommend ClassicShell or StartIsBack.

So...looking into getting a new laptop. Presumably, it's gonna come with windows 8, which I'm not a fan of.

BUT - when I bought my last laptop, it came pre-loaded with XP, along with a a windows 7 disc, which I never used.

Any downside to installing that disc, and getting win 7 on whatever laptop I buy now?

although windows 8 is a mess i can't go back to 7 there are so any things in 8 that didn't exist in 7

windows 10 should fix all the issues with windows 8

I had an it fellow upgrade my computer to windows 8 and he also loaded office 13 telling me that it was alegal program that the "company" paid for and there was an extra available one for me..... that was 2 years ago and now i am having problems and i realize it was not legal. in addition im having problems with the windows operating system. its saying that that also is not a legal one (even though i am using the computer) and I dont have a key for it
anyone have any idea what i can do??
For the office program im willing to buy it since i am not interested in stealing but for the windows operating system i shouldnt have to pay since i purchased the computer from dell and i just dont know the key that was used when i upgraded

However you log out there should be a power button next to it

Yes, you may need to downgrade to get the windows 7 key to work. BTDT (with older versions)
