to use it out of the us

In order to unlock an iphone you must jailbreak it first.
While i have jailbroken and unlocked my iphone (3gs) before, i have never done a 4s.

Check out the website and use the tutorial
After putting in some info about your iphone it will tell you if its able to be unlocked or not.

AFAIK there is currently no way to unlock an AT&T iPhone 4S. The GEVEY Ultra S for GSM iPhone 4S, when released in a few days should work to allow you to use a sim card from a different carrier in an AT&T iPhone 4S.

Nope 4S comes locked, but yes you can buy an unlocked version for $$$.

i assume the one for sprint even when unlocked cannot be used for verizon and the opposite, but do they also support GSM?

VZW and Sprint both come locked. Sprint will unlock for international carriers if you are in good standing (90 days?). Don't know how VZW works but I assume it's something of the same.

I dont think you can buy it unlock when you upgrade
but if you pay full you can get unlock from apple

Vzw will give u unlock code if your account is  in good standing for 60 days!!

Not sure if it still true but I read somewhere that sprint ipones come unlocked and they push an update with the lock when you activate the phone!

Yup that's how it was when it was first released, now they are locked to begin with.

Never heard of that... AFAIK AT&T doesn't sell any subsidized phone unlocked, even just internationally.
