You can't. Software based unlock has not been released yet. Only the jailbreak has.
The only way you can unlock your iphone 4s today is by calling sprint and convincing them to unlock it (if you are out of contract - which I doubt since you have an iphone 4s - u will have better chances...)

Unlocking the iphone from the carrier is perfectly legal. It is simply a process to go from sprint-network restricted iphone to an all-networks unloked iphone. Just like the one Apple is selling for $650. Don't worry if it was not legal, Apple would have shut them down after a day doing that...

Regarding u shutting down ur plan, i am not sure i understand, if u shut down ur plan then u close down ur phone line, then ur sim is useless. Ur phone will still work but u will have no phone number to make or receive calls...

Iphone 4s has been unlocked for a couple of weeks now. First by officially asking ur carrier to unlock the phone for u. It works in some rare instances but big YMMV. And 2nd option is by using the SAM unlock described in the tutorials @ iclarified.com (after being in the tutorials page go to the iphone section and then to "Most Recents". U ll find it there)
The process has been shut down by Apple 2 weeks ago but u still may have a shot at it...

Aboslutely. But, if u r onto the point where u r switching to at&t then instead of simply getting a sim card, i would suggest that u get a new $200 iphone and then sell the unlocked one for $600-$800 depending on the version u have

Yep. Iphone 4 very easily. Iphone 4s a little but trickier since it just came out so they are all still under contract but doable (personal experience)

Will not work on newer iPhones 4s 5.1........ ime nothing other than a Verizon/sprint unlock will work at this time

Sorry to contradict but WILL work on newer iphone 4s. I have two of those unlocked officially by at&t. I just came back from Israel where I used them with cellcom.

thats true if I want to be in a contract but I'm done with contracts I want to go without a contaract like straight talk or red pocket
