For the record, I find that a bad review on Trip Advisor goes a long way. I've gotten full refunds that way. When it comes to SPG, contacting via Twitter is very productive.

How does the hotel know which review is yours? You tell them "check out my review"?

But how do they connect a particular review to a particular person (most usernames reveal little information)? Is it worth posting a bad review before I complain or should I hold off and see how they respond?

They will likely reach out through TA and get your information.

Aha I've never had that before. though I haven't posted too many bad reviews, particularly of supposedly nice places. Do you think that approach is better than just going directly to the management of the hotel?

It really depends on the situation. I've once had a bad experience, and after talking to the manager and only getting offered 25% back, I published a review on trip advisor with exact details. I got a response on trip advisor asking me to be in contact with them so they can settle it. They refunded it totally.

Nice. How much was the stay total? Mind sharing?

Nothing that crazy, just overall a poor experience. It was a 4 four star Westin resort, very poor service, overcrowded to the point where I couldn't find a pool chair or go swimming most of the day, and they closed the gym unannounced for the entire duration of my stay, and I'm a big gym guy. So no shockers but I expected way better for the price (more than $200 a night plus fees) and had I known any of the above I would've gone somewhere else.

ETA: I'm not a big hotel complainer (as you can see I'm unfamiliar with the process) but I feel this is warranted.

Was by 2 hotels this month one issues was when we took a shower the bathroom would get flooded. I payed 8k spg for 2 nights and they refunded me 5k
The 2nd hotel was suppose to be a big King room with a jacuzzi and it was a small room no hot water in the jacuzzi. It costed 22k spg for 2 nights and they refunded me 10k for that issue

Lets start a thread with concrete hotel names that offered full refund after bad review on TA. Not every hotel does it. Also, a good idea to include what happened.

Residence Inn Beverly Hills paid for 2 nights (Shabbos) 80k.
Complaint: Room had a terrible smell
Compensation: lousy 10k
Conplaint: Didn't get an upgrade
Compensation: parking fees around $70.

I called up spg. the first one offered 5k or I can wait for a investigation to see if I can get more so I just took it. The 2nd said I will get a email within the next 5-7 days and they offered 10k song took it with out arguing

Doesn't seem like you should have definitely got an upgrade.
