Do your jury duty.

Manhattan Criminal Court:
The boring introductory speech takes about 45 minutes, and should begin relatively on time. Therefore, coming 45 minutes late is no big deal.

If you have a deferment, don't waster your time at the criminal court. Go straight to 60 Centre Street room 139. The line can get busy, so try to come at a good time.

1st day presentation, paperwork, selection (if you are not selected) took about half a day. We were out at 1pm

Good to know. Thanks!

Got a Summons in the mail today

What’s the best way out of this ? Or do I go and don’t hear from them for the next 8 years ?

First, you get one easy postponement just for the asking. So do that for as late a date as possible. Maybe Moshiach will come in the interim. Then, if you have no legitimate excuse, just do the time.

My daughter got exemption for 3 years because she is in school. Waited until they threatened fine before showing up.

Being a student usually gets you a postponement until the summer break. Being the primary caregiver of an infant or pre-school child often works as well for an indefinite postponement.

Personally when I got a Grand jury summons I responded that I was the breadwinner for my family and could not afford a 20% loss of salary for 1/3 of a year. I was excused without having to come down.

basically, all the 'bias' style excuses are irrelevant.
most of the pool gets 'picked'
and when you're on, it's (usually) 2 full weeks, full day work hearing multiple cases

I am upset for wasting my time on jury duty. I did not want to be there but could not leave, it felt like my freedom of movement was violated. And of course one has to listen to all the goverment propaganda (USA! USA! USA!) that is repeated over and over brainwashing nationalistic superiority using patriotism (a strong feeling, USA! USA! USA!) to justify the waste of time and violation of freedom of movement.

When I got called to the interview, I said that only criminals run from the police, the lawyer, an old man named Goldman, argued that maybe the police had arrested the wrong man, entirely possible!
Next I replied that I believe that the police know what they’re doing, and that was that, dismissed.

Someone I know is a state employee. Gets full salary on jury duty, plus the $40 a day, no days deducted from work.
He got called up for a grand jury, for every Thursday of the year. He did it for a half year, every Thursday, started at 10 usually ended around 2-3. He's one of the only guys who got jury duty who loved it.
I'm not who you think I am.

Old times who came over from Europe used to make a kiddush when they became US citizens.  ;) I assume you saved yourself a kiddush lol
In other countries, you would have to serve in the army.
