What credit cards can I apply for?
« on: September 23, 2012, 09:34:14 PM »
I am helping a relative apply for some cards. They don't have great credit though with a score of 625.
B"H I've never had to deal with a low credit score before so I am not sure which cards to go about recommending and which ones to NOT BOTHER applying for?

Any advice?

Low score or no credit history?

They have low score. Good credit history since they were 18 and they are in their lower 30s.

They have a quite a few different credit cards. Unfortunately mostly store credit cards etc. I don't think they need to work with a secure card but I am just wondering what would be reasonable for them to apply for to earn some points etc.
I'm a little out of my league since I don't have much experience with lower credit scores and with people who don't always pay on time.

IMO Freedom has the best chance, then United, then SP.
Could get all, could get nothing, YMMV....

You're going to get a person who doesn't pay his bills in full involved in credit card points game? Bad idea IMO.

+100   I told them to scratch their whole idea and to apply for a Slate card to at least avoid paying interest and try paying off some of their balances.

They wouldn't hear of it.

If there is no late payments, its doable (not easy, of course).

I hear you. I told them numerous times that I am not recommending to apply for the cards but they wanted to know which ones are good.
But you're right. I'm going to tell them again. Maybe I'll send a link for the Slate. I still think that is a way better idea.

Perhaps phrase it in such a way that they see that a zero balance card would actually earn/save them more money than signing up for, say, the CSP.

It's probably not too far from the truth, and depending on their balances and current APR, it may very well be accurate.

Right- I did mention that. My problem is that I don't know how much of a balance they are carrying.
But the more I think about it I really don't want anyone to be digging themselves into a whole because of anything I said at all.
They did say they wouldn't keep a balance on any of these cards. The other problem is that I don't know them personally to know if they are responsible and will actually follow that advice or are going to get in big problems. It doesn't seem like it from a few conversations but still.. you never know.
