Stock Pick Master Thread
« on: March 15, 2012, 09:03:35 AM »
Why not have thread where we can throw around stock picks? Let's keep it simple. Name the stock symbol and a short blurb why you think it's a pick...I'll start.

WMT (Walmart)...with 8,500 stores around the world people shop shop and shop at this well known brand. Yield is pretty good too.

Stock is up of late though it has retreated slightly.

You don't think online shopping will slowly wipe them out? They really don't seem to get their website going

Nope.

They sell all the small things that you cant get cheaper online, and there always be be the items that people wanna go to a store for.

Shipping adds to the price - so small items are usually not cheaper

I'm assuming shipping will go down in the long run
People buy more things online, so the cost of shipping is split across more items.
Cost of transportation will hopefully go down with automated electronic cars, especially with things like city deliveries.
Someone will hopefully figure out a way for collaborative shipment - if both me and me my next door neighbor are buying from Gap - we should share the cost of shipping. I think theres huge potential in something like this, but it's hard to envision anyone smaller than fb or google doing this.

I highly doubt it. Shipping goes by weight... the more items the more it'll cost. (I know if you split it up it comes out cheaper per item) Also shipping prices are just rising....

I dont know what you buy in Walmart/Target

But I go about every other week, these are from the typical items I buy - Lens solution, wipes, deodorant, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, paper towels, tissues, drinks, ketchup ... I could go on and on :) I dont think any of these items are item I want to order online....

Keep in mind that half their stores are outside the USA in emerging markets where online shopping isn't as popular yet. With all the new changes, I think there will always be a segment of the population that buys in store. You can't have an online only shopping world.

I'm sure their website will change with time....

Are their foreign operations as profitable and growing as the US?

The higher it goes up, the bigger the crash. Buy stocks when their undervalued not overvalued. There is way more to picking a stock than watching it go up for 2 years. basically every single stock in the market went up huge over the last 2 years.

Is it based technicals?
How about fundamentals.
How about the management. when you invest in a company, in essence yor investing in the management. it could have a lot of cash sitting around, it can have a great product (although many times it's a fad for example crox went from 75 to .86) but many times mangement is simply inept at running the company.

Who cares if walmart has 8,500 stores, are there better places to park your money? YES. Bear in mind when you invest in such a large cap stock your returns will not be that much, (although they might be relatively safer than a small cap) unless you put in a lot of money. Because when dealing with small amounts of money as opposed to a hedge fund who are putting in way more than an average joe can afford, 5% is not a whole lot of money, when you can easily be earning alot more. do you expect walmart to double? triple? WMT is valued at 200B do you really think it'll reach a trillion or even 500B?

AHT went from .86 to 14 now its at 9
CAR went from .48 to about 20
LVS went from 5 to 45
SNDK went from 7 to 50
CROX went from .98 to 28 now its at 20
ETC; ETC:

SO WHAT?

Is your solid reason, "because everyone is buying it?
as warren buffet says "be fearful when everyone is greedy and greedy when everyone is fearful".

Crox went up 2800% AHT went up 1400% Etc; So What? does that mean CROX is a good buy now?

AAPL disproves this theory. As do MA, FDX and many others.  Market Cap is not a determinant for growth.

Really? did aapl start out as a $400B comp. do you really see it hitting a trillion dollars? (if it does, get out of the marke, because the world has gone nuts). my point is, when you buy a small cap it may have the potential to go up a few 100% or a few 1000% not so with a large cap.

the world has gone nuts
+1
Not nuts necessarily, but definitely different. Trillion dollar companies could very well be a reality in the very near future.

I haven't done real research into WMT but I looked into some basics.  Walmart currently operates in (only) 15 countries.  International sales currently account for less than 25% of total revenue.  Most of Walmart's international growth has been over the last decade or so, and it continues to expand. See e.g. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-20/wal-mart-raises-stake-to-51-in-chinese-website-yihaodian.html.

Walmart has proven to be king in trial and error and creating business models that work.  Walmart is ready for a big run over the next 5 years.  You heard it here.

WMT is an incredibly stable investment, though usually low risk means low return. I own WMT for about 5 yrs now, riding it up and down the market waves. It did not crash as hard at the low, and is now making a nice comeback.
