This is 100% a math problem. If you do not know the rules of math you will get it wrong.

Lets make this simple.
1 + 1 X 0=?
If you don't apply math rules you will most likely get it wrong

Based on the results they are getting it wrong because they don't know math rules not because they are reading it wrong.

My dear aunt Sally died the day after I took that test, like most information did in school after being tested on it.

I assume that this was intended to be solved by the standard order of operations (and answered accordingly), but you can actually get 2 different answers with different calculators. The easiest way to show this is to run the problem through the Windows calculator in 'standard' mode and then again in 'scientific' mode (you can switch by clicking view and then the appropriate mode). You'll see that standard view will return 0 because it processes the operations as you put them in, which is to say left to right. But in scientific view it will return 14 because it processes the operation according to the standard order of operations.
