that makes no sense.
if it doesn't equate according to the rules of maththe standard order of operations it's mathematicallyconventionally incorrect.
when you got a different result from one of the calculators it was because you entered it wrong, not because that calculator uses different math rules.
+1
Math is either right or wrong there. I have had calculators make errors all the time. Its the way you enter it. The equation still has only 1 right answer under the standard order of operations.
FTFY guys.
I'm so glad you both decided that I made an input error. Maybe try it yourself on any computer with Windows (or any basic calculator that operates under
immediate execution). If you enter all the characters and operators in sequence left to right, a basic calculator will process each set of operations immediately. Hence the last operation will be 15 x 0 = 0. Try again with a scientific calculator and you'll see that as long as you don't press = till the end, the calculator will take in the full equation and apply the standard order of operations, resulting in a result of 14.
There is no one set of 'rules of math' (as whYME called it). When you write out an equation, it's meaningless without a set of rules determining what to do with the pieces. The
standard order of operations is what you've all been ingrained to think is
the rules. While of course it's the standard set of rules, it is not the only set of rules (see
here).
