CityPass Light Rail Ticket - Jerusalem
« on: March 18, 2012, 05:59:49 AM »
Interesting story...looking for any advice if anyone knows...

Got onto the train this morning....either I forgot to scan my card to pay or the machine didn't catch it. I do know for a fact that I took out my card to pay as I checked the balance a minute before the train came at the automated machine and there was money on the card...

..and so...a couple stops later the inspectors come by and check cards and lo and behold my card hadn't apparently been swiped!

The guy must have been new on the job as he didn't know what to do and called his supervisor...by the time he came around it was my stop so I got off and he followed.

The conversation then went like this:

Him: Passport?

Me: Not Israeli, here's my USA license.

Him: Passport number?

Me: I don't know it.

Him: Health Insurance card?

Me: Don't have it.

Him: Address?

Me: Not giving it.

Him: How long have you been living here?

Me: What's the difference?

Him: I don't want to call the Police and make this a whole big thing...

Me: So, mah kesher (what's the shaychus? :))

He just starts talking on his walkie talkie wondering what to do with this crazy American...

You get the jist...so he starts plugging in my USA driver's license and asks me to sign the ticket which I didn't...and then he hits print on his machine as it is supposed to print out a receipt of sorts to attach to the paper ticket (if I'm wrong about that please let me know)...but the machine froze and he had to reset it. That happened a second time after which I got 'restless' and started telling him to hurry up (in Israel you can get away with giving attitude to authority)

At the end, nothing ever ended up printing out, they handed me back my Rav Kav (bus/train pass) and ID and didn't say anything. I never received a ticket, I didn't give them any info and they apparently couldn't just read it off the card so they say..(even though you need to give them all that info when getting the card!)

Do I have anything to worry about?

TIA

First of all, as a chareidy I would of gone with a more polite attitude, I know its Israel bla bla but I still try to make a kiddush hashem even though I am American and they are Israelis!
They Egged problem PG was talking about, is not a problem, one just has to make sure that his Egged Rav kav is updated to code 72 which means compatible with the train, it can be done in main bus station. I dont believe that was the case by you, because they would of explained it to you.

you cannot swipe twice, once you swipe once the second one becomes a free transfer. You have nothing to worry about with the ticket. First of all the first "ticket" is only a warning, second of all the info you gave him is worthless. But i think you still owe them a click. And if i am not mistaken you cant click twice on a bus instead because they are 2 different companies even though the transfers work between them.

I'll just get on, swipe and get off before doors close...no reason why I shouldn't no matter if the machine didn't read the card or I just forgot...

Before practising your lumdes, and paskening halochos on the forum, read the whole thread, and get the facts of the situation right!
The light railway is NOT MALCHUSA owned, its owned by an independent company, citypass.

i have to eat my own words.

I remember from a few people that the first time on the train caught without a ticket is just a warning. I guess that changed, because my wife got one yesterday for 180 shekel, and it was her first time!
