Any of the following hotels decent?
Embassy Suites Convention Center
Hilton Riverside
Le Meridien
Omni Riverfront

If i'm not staying in the FQ does a car make more sense?

Depends where. We stayed in the CBD which is perfectly walkable to the FQ and right near the St. Charles streetcar line. Uber to/from MSY is fixed at $33 so that's the same either way.

we loved the le meridien, after putting us in a room with the view of the Harrah's HVAC units they upgraded us to a great room (nice but still no river view). decent coffee downstairs in the morning and good location all around allowing us to walk to the streetcar for food and to the french quarter for the best jazz in the world.

So then buy stuff locally or bring if it's easier. The supermarkets have the same standard kosher products there as they do anywhere else in the US. Don't count on matza and borscht though.

Yehoshua answered well, but the key for us there is the great quality jazz, whether at preservation hall, d.b.a, or so many other great live music venues in the FQ. gotta go for at least one set.

Frenchman Street on Saturday Night is a must. Go early as things quiet down there well before the FQ. I would reccomend Snug Harbor for solid Jazz.

How is New Orleans with younger kids. Thinking of going for a couple days late in the year with my 6 year old, are there things to do for kids (WWII museum would not interest her), or would you need a car for that?
