The airport is in Kenner which is about 20 minutes west of downtown/French Quarter. If you want to go anywhere besides the quarter it is probably a good idea to rent a car.  The kosher restaurants are in Metairie which is about 15-20 minutes from the quarter,  but will take longer during rush hour.
Must see places include:
National WWII museum (formerly called the D-day museum)
Take a ride up and down St Charles AVe on the streetcars. (there are also streetcar lines in the french quarter but those were added in the last 15 years. the St. Charles streetcars are original)
Take a cemetery tour (make sure to go with a legit company- the areas can be dangerous at night if you dont know where you are going)
a plantation (there are several plantations around the city- San Francisco plantation is particulalry good (http://bit.ly/mY5NXH)
Take a swamp tour-
Take a walk on Royal st. Its one block parallel to Bourbon. No trashy places, many antique stores, art galleries, etc. (tidbit- most movies that are "filmed" on bourbon st are actually filmed on Royal st. Personally I would avoid bourbon as it is really full of inappropriate clubs)

PM if you have specific questions.

I will be in there in May and have a conference that's starts early,  does anybody know if the traffic is bad around the French Quarter as I'm trying to figure out my schedule?

I'm assuming the restaurant is still kosher based in the earlier post.

Thanks

Will be spending a weekend in New Orleans this summer, and would appreciate any recommendations on where to stay.  I've never been there before, so I'm not at all familiar with the different areas or proximity to shuls, food, sights.  I have SPG pts and UR pts, but the hotel rates seem pretty cheap, so I'm not sure if I would even use my points.

Thank you

we stayed in the hilton st charles and waldorf astoria roosevelt hotel last summer. Both were pretty cheap as the summer is the off season. They were both within 5 min walk of FQ. the restauarants are in Metarie which is around a 20-25 min drive depending on traffic.

Here is an email I sent someone recently who was planning on visiting New Orleans

Firstly there are two kosher restaurants. Kosher Cajun is a ny style deli with some local dishes. Casablanca is a very nice restaurant with mostly Moroccan/middle eastern food- very good. Both are located in Metairie, which is about a twenty minute drive from downtown/French quarter area(will take longer during rush hour).

Museums:
I highly recommend the  national WWII museum. They have a 4-d movie too.
Less famous is the confederate war museum, which has a bunch of cool artifacts from the civil war, mostly from the southern point of view.

Noma = New Orleans museum of art is located in city park. You can hop on the red street car line from downtown to city park. City park also has paddle boat rentals and surrey bikes
There is also the ogden museum of southern art which is located near the wwii museum.

The cabildo- aka Louisiana state museum: as the name implies all about the history of Louisiana and place the Louisiana purchase was signed

The Audubon aquarium is very good, as is the Audubon zoo. They actually sell a package where you can visit both the aquarium and the zoo and ride a ferry down the river to get to the zoo from downtown. Also part of the Audubon institute is the insectarium- I haven't been there but have been told its interesting

There is a free ferry that takes you(and your car if you'd like, though I think they charge $1 for a car) across the river to Algiers. There are some historic buildings and some shops in old town Algiers.

You don't want to walk down bourbon st., especially with kids even during the day. However the next street over, royal st, is a must. It has gorgeous architecture, great shops, boutiques, galleries, etc.
There is a streetcar(original from when streetcars were in vogue) that goes down st Charles ave, which has beautiful houses and is uniquely new Orleans. (If you go to the zoo, you can ride the ferry one way and take the streetcar back downtown).

Beauregard-keyes house: home of confederate general pt beauregard.($10 fee)

There are also several old plantations that offer tours and show what it was like for the slaves. There are some nice ones between New Orleans and baton rouge. (Off the top of my head, San Francisco plantation, oak alley plantation are the famous ones. )

Also interesting is a swamp tour, though in the winter you don't see many alligators or other animals.

The Roosevelt was definitely more upscale and a bit closer to the French Quarter. I highly recommend the National WW2 museum and the Mardi Gras museum.

Does anyone have any insight into parking availability at hotels in or around the french quarter, whether street parking is difficult, and whether there are any hotels that offer free parking?

thx

Street parking is very difficult around that area. Most hotels in or near the quarter charge for parking and depending on the hotel it can be expensive. The further out you go there may be free parking. I was able to work out a deal with a parking garage for cheap parking.

The only place that i know of that has free parking is Harrahs. The catch is you need a players card and you need to play a half hour.

We're headed to NOLA in Feb 2015, staying Shabbat in the Garden District at a boutique hotel. We definitely want to take advantage of the music scene (Preservation Hall), but we're looking for other recommendations on what to do. Yes, I've read the whole thread, but i don't know if we're much museum-people and Feb isn't exactly alligator season. Plantations are a possibility, though, thanks for that nod.

What else would be good for a long date weekend in NOLA? Any authentic Zydeco joints?

HOTELS-
Our Fri-Sat night stay is covered, but we need a Sun night stay. I've got a ton of points, but could use some guidance on which are decent redemptions for decent properties. Right now, we're not planning to rent a car.

Are you flying back on Monday?
City Park has one of the nicest and coolest sculpture gardens I've ever seen!
As for the music scene, make sure you hit Frenchman Street before Bourbon Street. Snug Harbor on Frenchman has good quality bands performing.
Advice if you are bar hopping,  carry cash to pay for one drink minimum.  Most bars have a $10 min on CC's.
