Does anyone have any insight into parking availability at hotels in or around the french quarter, whether street parking is difficult, and whether there are any hotels that offer free parking?

thx

Street parking is very difficult around that area. Most hotels in or near the quarter charge for parking and depending on the hotel it can be expensive. The further out you go there may be free parking. I was able to work out a deal with a parking garage for cheap parking.

The only place that i know of that has free parking is Harrahs. The catch is you need a players card and you need to play a half hour.

We're headed to NOLA in Feb 2015, staying Shabbat in the Garden District at a boutique hotel. We definitely want to take advantage of the music scene (Preservation Hall), but we're looking for other recommendations on what to do. Yes, I've read the whole thread, but i don't know if we're much museum-people and Feb isn't exactly alligator season. Plantations are a possibility, though, thanks for that nod.

What else would be good for a long date weekend in NOLA? Any authentic Zydeco joints?

HOTELS-
Our Fri-Sat night stay is covered, but we need a Sun night stay. I've got a ton of points, but could use some guidance on which are decent redemptions for decent properties. Right now, we're not planning to rent a car.

Are you flying back on Monday?
City Park has one of the nicest and coolest sculpture gardens I've ever seen!
As for the music scene, make sure you hit Frenchman Street before Bourbon Street. Snug Harbor on Frenchman has good quality bands performing.
Advice if you are bar hopping,  carry cash to pay for one drink minimum.  Most bars have a $10 min on CC's.

Sheraton Meterie is really nice. Very underpriced at 3K Starpoints per weekend night. They also have airport shuttle service. I stayed there on a Sunday night before a early Monday morning flight and was pleasantly surprised how nice this Category 2 hotel was. We got upgraded to club level which is always cool!

I have a weekend conference at the New Orleans Riverside Hilton. Any shuls near there? My big concern is that it's Parshas Zachar.
If you see something that is 50% off but don't need it, walk away and save yourself 100%

thanks for the tip! I just booked this one - but it's 4K SPG now (Sun night stay). Any tips on getting upgraded? I'm newly emboldened by a successful $50 trick upgrade at the Bellagio 8)
