I think you should add the caveat that the value of Avios to you (at least in the U.S.A.) will be based on how active AA is in your city.

I successfully cancelled a reservation 4 people within 24 hours of flight, and better than that got full avios and tax refund

i've no idea why they did that i was surprised too, i just called and explained that they were supposed to visit a sick family member but the condition worsened and the patient cannot accept visitors

So when you say -1 you meant to say in extenuating circumstances (or if you're willing to lie) you may be able to get them to cancel it for you

I am trying to book NYC>IAG or BUF and it's showing no availability.
I checked AA and they don't fly direct From NYC>BUF.
This may be the problem when I log into my account I don't have the option to Book with Avios-is this the problem?

if they don't fly that route how can there be availability?

You can fly to YYZ or YTZ and drive. Not as convenient though.
