UA Upgrade with Miles

What are the chances of getting upgraded on a flight if I apply 15,000 miles + copay on a domestic flight on UA?

The option on my reservation currently says I'll be put on a waitlist. So I am wondering if it's even worth it if I have no status.

I understand there needs to be R/RN inventory. My question is whether I even have a shot if I put myself on the waitlist.
