There are 3 types of rewards you can get from opening a Citi Checking account.
TY points (if MISC and not a spend rebate) are taxable in the year redeemed not earned.
Cash back or AA miles (for opening a checking account, if MISC) are taxable in the year earned.

I haven't been following 100% but is it true I am going to be taxed after redeeming my 100K points that I got as a sign up bonus?

By points I am assuming you mean miles - so no.

Citi Thank You POINTS? I'm redeeming them for travel through the Thank You site. Why are they miles?

Citi Thank You POINTS?
It all depends how you received these. CC sign up bonus or for checking/savings bonus?

+1. This has been discussed in much much larger forums with hundreds of thousands of members , and that seems to be the governments position. Credit card sign ups
are not taxed.

Prolly because it would be very difficult to enforce so the government
is not going to spend 10 cents to MAYBE collect 1 cent .

I redeemed my points for airfare and received a 1099 for all of them. Which makes no sense as I didn't use them for cash but as an award.

Who sent you the 1099? Which rewards/cc company?
It is all from Hashem and he will continue to give!

Were these points from a credit card or was it a bonus for opening a checking account?

The checking account bonus should be taxable.

CountValentine,
What pshat in the picture?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.
