if u don't intend on flying again any time soon, definitely BA.

Not so fast there, it depends on the fare class of the AA ticket.

unless he's earning over 12.5k which is pretty hard on AA, and he doesn't plan on getting more any time soon, everything else is virtually worthless.

its a short haul flight ie not a real mileage earner, but its a waste not to get the miles if i can so why not! i do not plan on flying them anytime soon. its a regular economy flight booked over orbitz (cheapest flight i found), im not sure what the fare class is though

If you give the route, date, and price paid I may be able to figure it out.

Yup, that should earn 100% miles (838 round trip) in AA or BA.
The real question is why didn't you try to get some AMEX points to book that trip through BA.

Doesnt BA have 500 min per segment? and in theory he could find a OW ffp that does, although I'd prefer Avios.

6,000 AMEX=9,000 BA, enough for a RT ticket like that.
AMEX points are worth about a penny and a half, and you would have 27K of them after opening a free card like Premier Rewards Gold. and spending $2K.  Enough for 9 one-way LGA-CLE or other short-haul flights.

BA doesn't have fees within the western hemisphere and they also have no expedite fees.

The AMEX 1:1.5 ratio runs through 05/31 and then it goes back to a 1:1 ratio.
Starwood always gives a 20:25 ratio.
AMEX doesn't have any good no-fee cards, though with all of their promotions like small business saturday, et al, it's not hard to pay back your annual fee and then some.

Yes.
