Too lazy to go back and find the part of this thread where this was relevant, but here's a great quote from the ABC news article someone linked to earlier:

Quote
When asked why people are obsessed with the lottery, Sacerdote said, "for certain small bets we are 'risk loving.' That is to say we are willing to make a poor expected value bet for the chance to have an enormous 'transformative' gain."

My goodness.

Personally, with the amount of people I saw this morning waiting in line to buy tix, I bet the end jackpot will ultimately be more than that.

I gave up on the jackpot, but I still have hope for the second or at least the third prize. anyone here would claim the 7th-8th-9th prize if they win?

Even if you share that prize with other people?

P.s. I don't know if this post is considered a halachic commitment, since "אין אדם מקנה דבר שלא בא לעולם", though it isn't so simple in the case of a מתנה.

Why not?

This might still be considered דשלב"ל.

If you walk buy a place where you can redeem it, it isn't worth your time to step in and cash the ticket?

In that case, you could've bought a ticket a different week - those prize amounts stay the same. (And a plus to buying a different week would be that you would also have a better chance at winning the jackpot).

The lady at the gas station was shocked that I wanted just one.  She said everyone else was buying them by the dozen!

Tell her to kick in 11 bucks and you will take the dozen!

"In Southern California's Coachella Valley, consumers are spending up to 10 times more than usual on Mega Millions tickets, says David Woosley, field consultant for several 7-Eleven stores.

"It's been outrageous," Woosley says. "Every customer coming in is buying at least eight tickets. I'm seeing people buying $50 to $100 worth rather than the $2 to $3 they usually spend.""

Do people really think that buying 100 tickets will help them out that much more than buying one ticket?
