However the more people that buy the bigger the chance that 2 tickets will have the same number, and then the prize is split

I think the last time the lotto was this near big it was won by 2 people
Pick the higher numbers (>31) then you have a better chance of winning by yourself.

Because more people pick lower numbers presumably even though the odds of every number are the same.

Most people who pick their own numbers also throw a lot of birthdays in there.

I don't do it because of haskafa issues. Not hishtadlus according to my LOR.
R Reuven Feinstein did a Q&A in my yeshiva several years ago. The question of lottery tickets came up. He said you are mechuyav to buy 1 ticket for a drawing, but it is ossur to buy 2. (Forgot what his psak was about scratch offs.)

No, the probability of the same numbers go down as every ball is picked...

Interesting theory.  So you should also pick lower than, say 40, to account for the year.

When the lotteries first came out not many people did quick picks. This theory was backed up by many studies.

So I assume you've won quite a few yourself and are quite wealthy and are only charging so as not to give out the secret sauce to everyone! Lol   ;) ;)

IL has an online site but...

I certify I am the registered user of this account, am 18 years of age or older, and am completing this transaction within the boundaries of the state of Illinois.

ETA: There are other online sites you can buy a Mega ticket but I don’t think they are official sites so be careful.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/mega-millions--by-the-lucky-numbers-.html
Due to the article saying:
"The numbers that came up least often were 41, 49, 47, 37, and 34."
i'm sure there now will be hundreds or thousands of tickets bought with exactly those numbers. :D

How will the group buyer prove he actually bought it?

Or maybe pick someone from IL as the shliach to buy it, so he can forward the confirmation email.  :-\
