The insurance is the only reason I haven't used AA for rental cars yet.

           Or maybe it's worth paying for insurance out of pocket.
aren't there third party insurers that charge decent rates? Like when u buy travel insurance?

many of my cards specify that i can use free day vouchers- some specify that i need to pay for one rental day on the card others have said that as long as i pay the fees on the card they cover (ircc the old ink cash card - then one that uses the old chase rewards) and yes i have it all in writing
have u checked with your cc benefit provider?

There is a company called Allianz global assistance (Formerly Access America), that sells collision insurance for rental cars. I'm not sure if they sell liability as well.

EDIT: I just spoke to them.  They charge $9 per day up to 45 days. This is for collision only and covers as the primary insurance.
