at what point do you think one has seen enough of scenic drive and can get off the PCH and get back to the 101 to save time to LA area
As mentioned upthread a while ago, If you wanted to do that, cutting over by Paso Robles is probably your best bet, although I'm not sure you save that much time.

I had no idea this thread existed. I was looking at the Nor-Cal thread for information when we went on a road trip this past October from San Francisco to the Big Sur and didn't find any helpful information there.

GIYF. The only other place I stayed at in the area was the Marriott Monterrey. It was nice but not memorable.

driving down the PCH north to south do I have to map out(find out the address) of the following scenic places: (partington cove, mcway falls) or will I easily see signs for them off highway 1?

I put everything in my GPS before we started driving and I am glad I did. I would've missed many of our stops without it. Also, there is no reception for a lot of the way on PCH so its important to put it into your GPS before you start.

Bixby bridge you will pass over but I liked knowing how far we were so I would recommend putting that in the GPS. We also did Lover’s Point Beach, Pfeiffer Beach and McWay falls and were able to point all of those in the GPS.

there are specific address for these (Bixby Bridge Lover’s Point Beach, Pfeiffer Beach and McWay falls) on the gps or you searched them as attractions/locations/locations on the gps?

also we are driving from sfo to LA in one day which would you say are can't miss if you only have 1 day?

Yes, I just put it in as an attraction location.
It’s really hard to say, we drove from SFO to Big Sur via PCH, slept over night in Monterey and then went back to Big Sur to go to Carmel By the Sea and McWay Falls and then drove to Oakland for shabbos. I don’t know how long it will take to drive all the way to LA but you also don’t have to spend a lot of time at each stop. If I have time later tonight I will post pics of our trip so you can decide or yourself.

If you have one day I would advise this going on the 5. One day is not enough time to see PCH. If you did want to drive on PCH though, you'd have to start really early in the morning and you wouldn't get to La until very late at night, as it's a very long drive. Plus, if you do it in one day you're not going to have any time to stop.

Bump
There are street lights and views during the day are amazing, but you're correct, once it gets dark there's not as much to see. However, if driving south, there's a large section of road where you can skip if it's dark and you're not losing much, especially if it's south of SLO.

Let's say driving South to North and this is our only opportunity, is it a waste will it still be worth the six hour drive?
Since I've so many people say how driving North to South is the best.

Basically like @Yehoshua said, the parts you really don't want to miss are all before S Louis Obispo so if you'll make it there before dark IMO it's totally worth it.

Sorry, I misread, I thought you came around to N to S.

If you get out early enough in the morning I think you should be fine. N-S > S-N, but I think S-N > nothing. (as long as you get out super early. If it gets dark by the time you hit SLO it's a total waste of time.)
