You could have applied for it without the Platinum status.  I hope you're not confusing it with the benefits you get for applying as a Diamond member.

i don't have any experience but it sounds like there are benifits of being Platinum prior to signing up for the card, Dan wrote "Hyatt

Platinums only need to spend $1 and get 2 free suite upgrades on paid stays" on the card description (as apposed to $1000 spend)

T&Cs of the card app make no mention of needing to spend $1000.
"GOLD & NEW MEMBERS:You will qualify for and receive your two Hyatt Gold Passport® Free Night Awards after your first purchase."

My gf got 2 paid suite upgrades and 2 free nights after first spend for applying as a Gold member, so in her case status at time of app didn't matter.  Perhaps YMMV?  However, she was was upgraded to Platinum shortly after she got the card but before her first spend.

IMHO the best benefit is applying as a Diamond:

2 Award Nights in a Suite after your first purchase

as i said i don't have any personal experience, my info is based on this:

"2 free nights at any Hyatt worldwide for spending $1,000. Free Hyatt Platinum status.  Hyatt Platinums only need to spend $1 and get 2 free suite upgrades on paid stays.  Hyatt Diamonds get the 2 free nights in a suite for spending $1. No Forex fee.  Free automatic annual night at category 1-4 hotels. $75 annual fee."

parenthetically, does anybody know a way to get diamond status other than staying many times at hyatts?
