i dont really see the diff between the metel ones vs the earthenware ones. I wud say go with what ever is cheaper. Thebuzz, db, and store the like have then on sale bi-weekly. Just note, if you get the earthenware type - remember to put in small balls of silverfoil on bottom, so that you are allowed to remove it friday night.:D

@helpme do you know what chulent is? ;)

Big machlokes about the aluminum foil balls- most poskim hold you need to line the inside of the crock pot- Garoof okatoom in halachich terms.

I believe yeki89 is right. Some poskim hold that lining the crockpot is not enough and therefore the aluminum balls are uses as an extra stringency.

True

The reason for the metal balls is cuz it might be הטמנה so the balls lift it a little and then you dont have the problem.

But either way I like the earthenware cholent pot a little better - as the heat is more spread out (on the sides, as apposing to only on the bottom)

I got a 5 qt. 2 years ago Black Friday from Kohls.com for $7

The small aluminim balls will not help for 18 qt Crok pots. The heat comes only from the sides and not from the bottom. I honestly dont see any difference between any crock pot, my cholent comes out amazing wherever it is.

This is what I use, should be much cheaper in a store.  Has lots of room on top to use as a blech.

Yes, I am aware of that. And that is why I said in the 18qts where the heat does not come from the bottom, the balls will not help out.

Im not sure if either of you know the reason for the balls.

The problem is הטמנה that you are not allowed to have a הטמנה on Shabbos in a case of מוספ חום now since its a fire it gets hotter and its an issue. The point of the balls or rock is to lift it a little, as even lifting it the slightest bit takes away the issue of הטמנה

Correct.  But if you would lift the pot and the walls would still be flush against the base walls it would also be problem.  Hatmanah doesn't only apply to the floor,  it applies to the sides also

Most crockpots, when you raise the insert just an inch, the walls aren't touching anymore bec the bottom is bigger than the top.  Hence my post
