On mine the size selector buttons were all flashing and it wouldn't let me choose a size, and therefore wouldn't get hot.

Lots of fatalities this Friday the 13th.

I bought the one Amazing Savings sells. It's not the insert type, so no hatmanah issues, and it even comes with a blech and a knob cover. The cholent comes out excellent.

BTW, there was a discussion upthread about hatmanah with the stoneware crockpots, and I don't think anyone described correctly what putting foil balls inside does.

By raising up the insert, the walls are no longer completely covered by the sides, rather, partially exposed to the air. Hence, it's not hatmanah. A wee bit would not be enough, it needs a significant amount.
you mean to say the pot has to b lifted to a point where most of the food inside the pot is not surrounded by the walls of the pot good luck to your cholent especially if you don't fill your pot to the top

No, it doesn't have to be most, it just can't be so little that it's not significant. I don't know a precise percentage.

warning those looking to purchase a slow cooker I have a Hamilton beach and I noticed that for weeks my cholent was tasting and smelling funny (with a bag and without) until I decided its the rubber gasket on the lid so I soaked it in vinegar washed it ... to no avail the company finally agreed to send me a cover without a gasket from a different model but first I have to try another cover. I refused to have a bad cholent one more week so I took a razor and cut the gasket and the cholent came out beautiful ever since.... so stay away from pots with gaskets the rubber is going in your cholent!! you can even google the issue.

To clarify, you are correct that for there not to be הטמנה (according to the שיטה that it's הטמנה despite the top not having a cover besides the lid) there would need to be רוב uncovered. However, that is because a crockpot, with the top exposed, is a normal way to cook, so the typical partial exposure doesn't help.

However, artificially raising the pot by putting foil balls (some use a tuna can or a spoon) should work because the  exposure of the top inch or two of the walls of the pot is not typical. כנלע"ד.

Any good deals out there on crock pots? It's not for Shabbos, so I'm ok with electronic models too. Thanks.

Walmart has a 8 quart for 25 ($5 off) online with same day pickup in howell. Dunno about the quality.

However, I'd rather buy from Amazon or Target. But I don't see any great deals there...

I was actually looking around for one today and walmart was by far the cheapest of all the stores. I really want on a drop bigger than 8.5 but couldn't find any cheap ones
