Im not sure if either of you know the reason for the balls.

The problem is הטמנה that you are not allowed to have a הטמנה on Shabbos in a case of מוספ חום now since its a fire it gets hotter and its an issue. The point of the balls or rock is to lift it a little, as even lifting it the slightest bit takes away the issue of הטמנה
I don't  know about your 18qt Crock Pot. But mine the walls dont get any smaller towards the bottom, hence raising the pot wont make a difference.

Even so hatmanah is only assur if it's on all sides so still maybe mutar because it's no longer touching on the bottom

Ever heard of pan liners? Its basically a big plastic bag that goes in your crockpot! No more cleaning, washing, scrubing!

Buy the Heimish brand: it does the job and is a fraction of the price.

The heimish brand only sells small bags. They don't just fit into an 8 quart pot, and if the bags slips a little and siled in, your in trouble.

I buy the 18 qt bags and use them in the regular size pot. They have a chof-k. They cost about. 75¢ a bag.

I vehemently disagree! The heimish brand has never worked for me. It melts to the pot thereby creating a mess, and getting plastic in your cholent. The reynolds have never given me a problem.

If Chof-k is needed than that probably means that some of the plastic is getting in your cholent...

C'mon, Definitly aint worth having the cholent taste like plastic in order to save some elbow grease. An easy way to clean it, is to bubble it up with water for an hour, and all the stuff stuck to the side will come off.

Use it every week. Cholent doesn't taste like plastic. Its not the heimish brand, its strong stuff.

Don't you think some of the plastic get into your food, albeit without the tasting like it?

I believe yeki89 is right. Some poskim hold that lining the crockpot is not enough and therefore the aluminum balls are uses as an extra stringency.
the balls help for hatmana (insulating)- but not for chazara (returning the pot after taking from it on shabbos)- a good thick lining with thick aluminum foil will take care of both. There is also shehiya issues- if it was not fully cooked before shabbos that you would also need the complete lining. (there are poskim that allow just the balls but R'SZA and others do not like it.
