Virgin Atlantic always charged only $5+ fee for Delta award tickets booked through VA. I'm looking at a few award ticket options, like MXP-JFK; FRA-JFK; NCE-ATL all have big fees added to the usual 30k award ticket price.

Has anyone heard from VA that this would be official? Or only temp?

They've always charged fuel surcharges exEU. If you book it as a RT originating from the US, they don't charge it.
