I would definitely go that route, you can always call afterwards to claim back the annual fee, but you avoid the mussar lectures that you just got points, so why you cancelling etc etc.

+1.  I've done that for my last 2 AMEXes with no problem.  Was even able to request a refund of my prorated annual fee that way as well.

Click on CS on top left and follow through you are sending a email that you want to cancel. It worked very well a few times for me.
