How do these transactions usually go? I'm looking into a few places for this summer, and I'm just curious how people handle reserving and payment so that both sides are comfortable.
I've paid deposit at booking and the rest of the balance a day or 2 before leaving. Although some people like full amount upon "check in"

Kinda risky for the host.
If guest cancels a week before he loses the chance to book it.

Yeah, but your way is risky for the guest. They have 0 recourse if you essentially deny them board, or even if there are simply complaints that could warrant a partial refund.

As a host I can show them my airbnb ratings that I am a good host.
As a tenant they can't prove much and the money is in their hands.

That's half the point of Airbnb though. They hold the money, right?

I'm not attacking you as a host, I'm just saying that not every host will have a sterling reputation, or even much of a reputation at all.

For that reason the deposits are usually pretty high (i've paid 25+%) and if your a no show they get the deposit. I'm pretty sure it it's just through an add in a local paper people will be scared to pay all up front. In the other hand it's it's through a site (air b&b; reserve kosher etc.) they you do pay all upfront.

Airbnb holds the money and I know I'm guaranteed it. And yes there is definitely value for both hosts and guests in airbnb.
But if the guest wants to go off airbnb to save money, they will need to believe that I'm trustworthy based on my ratings.

I understand you weren't attacking, just here to express what works for me.
Though I don't book off airbnb so often.

How do you handle kashrus when renting on AirBnB? I've rented out my apartment many times but only once on AirBnB despite tons of requests because I'm just too nervous to rent to strangers.

How do you handle the actual transaction? I found a place in Tzfas on Airbnb, and took it off site to email. If I used Paypal, would I have any recourse should something go wrong?
