Anyone need to give maaser?

Hey everyone - My team for the National Hillel Basketball Tournament is still in need of some money (approx. $840) in order to play in the tournament this coming weekend. All proceeds go towards Hillel and is tax deductible.

Our deadline is this Friday (4/20/12)

I thought that they need $850 to enter the tourny. But maybe Hillel will only let them join, if they raise money for Hillel? If that's the case I can see how it's maaser. If so I stand corrected.

It is a basketball tournament to raise money for Hillel. You can read all the information on the website: http://hilleltournament.com/Tournament/Home.html

This is going to be the 2nd annual event as last year's event was a great success. 

Each team is required to raise $1200 in order to play in the event and be apart of the weekend (shabbat food, programs, etc).

The events are being held at the University of Maryland (where I go)

Each team is expected to raise $1200 (we raised $360 already). It is a fundraiser event! If we do not raise the money, then we need to pay out of pocket. Like I said before, ALL of the money goes to Hillel - which is a nonprofit organization that does a lot of good for many communities and universities.

Most poskim hold that its mutar to use maaser money for a Chinese auction - but if you win, you must give the money again. 

In HelpMe's case, you are 'buying' (or maybe 'bartering' is a better word) something with maaser money.
