Especially since my debt is only $270 and its no big loss to them..

Offer them something to take it off, if that doesn't work (meaning they are schmucks), ask them to verify it. If they purchased the $270 in debt (for a fraction of $270), the best they can hope is to get $270 (or a bit more) and move on, getting nothing from you will just mean a loss to them.

Yes, a very small loss indeed to make them get off their rear end and remove it from my CR. See what I'm up against?
So you're suggesting I PFD before I DV.. interesting take, hadn't thought about that... I might try going that route, although, they can still be schmucks..

OTOH, if they care for $270, why didn't they readily agree to take it off every time I spoke to them on the phone and offered to pay in full with no hassle?

I'm following AsherO's advice and I'm first sending a "pay for delete" letter and, if that doesn't work, I'll be requesting debt validation.
Question: I want to sent my letter with certified mail, so I can have proof of delivery.
Do they have a choice of not accepting the letter when the mailman comes? Will the reject it if they see that it's coming from a private person (i.e. a debtor who might be DVing within the 30 day period)?
If they will reject it in that case, is it ok to fake it as a company letter or something more neutral?
Ideas?

Update: I called the collection agency to see if they still owned the debt before sending a DV or PFD.
The guy on the line was trying to make me say that I was liable for the debt. At no point did I say that, plus I started arguing back. At one point he said he was going to place this under "dispute", not sure if he did it or not.
Does anyone know what "dispute" with a CA means?
