Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

WOW!!

I just called AMEX and said i didn't want to pay the yearly fee, and instead of offering me starpoints (or even giving me a chance to ask) the CSR said she would be glad to downgrade me to a fee free amex.
After talking some more, i told her that i recommended this card to a someone and she said that she'll give me 3000 goodwill points for that (i believe i am also receiving 5000 points because the person applied through the link i sent her....)

I have a citi advantage AA for years and never pay an annual fee.
When you threaten to cancel they transfer you to someone specialized in trying to keep customers.
They make different offers but i don't settle till full annual fee credit, although sometimes i need to commit to 5 purchases or something like that.

I have found that amex spg will never fully credit, only give points. Did anyone have diff. experience w/ amex spg?

3,000 or more points (6,000 in my case this time)is worth more than the annual fee, so no big deal to me.

Dan, do you have one AMEX card that you always keep open for the warranty protections etc, and which one?

Let me guess, an SPG personal, since it can't be churned.

and also since, as the best spending card, the warrantied item was probably bought on it
