Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Let me guess, an SPG personal, since it can't be churned.

I recall Dan recently saying that before his last churn of the SP AMEX, his other SPG cards were already closed. I didn't catch anything about personal or biz. Perhaps Dan himself can fill us in.

I recently cancelled my AMEX gold card for two reasons...I had signed up for a new one and received the sign-up bonus, and the yearly fee was due. They didn't offer me anything...they just shut it down.

you received a new sign up bonus even though you hadn't yet closed the existing card?

They didn't offer me anything either, you need to pretend to be offended and ask what they can do to keep your business.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

It means that (officially) you can't get the signup bonus twice.

i called up amex to cancel my starwood business card- and told them i love this card, but i see im being charged a yearly fee now, right now i cant pay that amount, is there anything they can do to help, and the guy says yes sure- i can downgrade your card to a free card. so i said and they have the benefits of starwood card? so he said no.. i cant offer you anything cus there are many cards that dont have an annual fee.. i said ok thanks.. i guess ill call up a bit later to cancel my card cus i cant do it right now i just need to sort things out first on it. and he says, well ma'am if you want i can cancel that for you right now, no need to wait. i said oh thanks sir, ill call back. ok.. seems this will be harder than i thought!

Im having a hard time getting anything for my SPG Amex.   I called a dozen times. Two different reps gave me 500 points but no one was willing to either waive the fee, or give me a few thousand miles. Any tips for the best way to convince them? They seem fine with me canceling!

$30,000        I just called again and got another 1500 points. How many times can I get points before they realized I called already and got points?   They didn't ask me to committ to keeping it because of the points, so I still have a right to cancel and can potentially still get more retention bonus points.
