I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

I was bored so I called up and told them that I am thinking of closing my accounts bec. of the annual fee that will becoming up soon, so they transfered me to a account specialist who offered me this, and then I asked them if they can offer this to my wifes account and she said sure...
It seems that they will offer you either 3000 miles or the $85 statement credit.

More than a few thousand spending in the past year?

When I originally posted I had only got 500 x 2. Now that I got another 1500, I'm curious how much I can get before someone realizes I've called before....
I called again and was given another 3000 points! The rep did mention that he's giving them assuming I'm keeping the card open and if I end up canceling the card those points will be reversed. I'm holding by 5,500 points so far for keeping the card open....:)

Point reversal claims by phone reps are probably BS IMHO.

Some people seem to think that retention bonus is like the chase 25k giveaway. be careful that you don't end with so many points and no credit cards

You can't call every day and ask for the 25k giveaway (if that's what you insist on calling it) either...

So how many miles/points did YOU buy with your annual fee?
« Reply #161 on: April 05, 2011, 05:04:23 PM »
Post here your experience with your credit card company when calling in to try to take off (or get something in exchange of) your annual fee:

Just got off the phone with starwood  :D, told the rep. that I've given them a very substantial amount of business this past year, and that "a friend told me that they take off the annual fee for something like that". Obviously she said she cannot do it but she can offer me some Starpoints as appreciation. Puts me on hold and when she comes back on the line she announces that she gave me 3,000 points. to make it short, I said that won't cut it, escalated the call and got 5,000 additional (total of 8,000) points from the supervisor. I'm a happy camper today.
BH, this year I was lucky, got it on the first try and under 5 minutes on the phone.
Last year I got just 4,000 points from them.

Also my recent experience with Citi, they offered me 10.000 miles if I spend $5000 within 6 months (swiped $5000 a day later).

If You See Something, Say Something!!

or chase BA card

I got a 5,000 mile bonus from Chase, when my $75 fee was charged on Feb 1, to keep the account open. I called again and was told you have 60 days from when my fee was charged to have it reversed if you close the account.

I got the bonus and closed the account 60 days later

Just got the typical offer from Citi to waive the annual fee if I make 5 transactions within three months. Looks like I'll be squeezing a few more drops of gas soon... of course they don't call it waiving the fee, but rather an $85 credit after I swipe five times. Funny thing is I opened this card in '09 and got the annual fee waived the same way last year.

You didn't even have to ask? Nice.
