I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

I called chase united and told them that I'd like to close the card before the annual fee hits and they told me they'll give me a 10,000 mile retention bonus (or $100). I asked"what if I decide to close it anyway?" they said take the bonus and call again to close it if you want. So I did. :)

What did you say to them to get them to credit you the annual fee?
Just told them I don't spend enough on the card to warrant keeping it. Apparently they disagreed.

Has anyone received a retention from BoA for their HA or VS cards?

I look at this more as an appeasement offering due to my complaining rather than a retention bonus, but there's no thread for that  :P
Here goes:
I was chatting with Amex about something minor regarding my Biz Plat card. But the rep was really awful - didn't read my questions carefully, long pauses, etc. So I asked to be transferred to supervisor and I complained about the lousy customer service. He tried to appease me by giving me 1,000 MR. After he added the points to my account, I continued complaining and I asserted that I am seriously considering downgrading my Platinum card because the service is too lousy. After a lot of back and forth, he gave me 7,500 SPG points! (He offered a  $75 statement credit but I politely requested Starwood points instead  ;D)
I am planning on downgrading anyway in a few weeks...

Called to cancel my CITI AA Amex before my annual fee kicked in. They offered to wipe off my annual fee in a statement credit, plus double points on 1,000 spend per month. I took it, but should I have gotten more?

Citi reps can only give you offers that are available on your account.

Was offered 1k starpoints to keep open SPG.
Spent around $14k YTD.
Pretty bummed out about the offer, but figured that I should take it and then cancel after SBS (have an AU on the card) or call in to see if more offers.

I just got the same 1,000 points offer from them and I spend a lot less, maybe 2k YTD. So it looks like its not based off spending..

I didn't think it was based off spending really, thought that they just got tight fisted.

Offered 3000 Starwood Points to hold onto my SPG :) Between SBS & Warranty Replacements this card absolutely pays for itself.
