I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Is 5K of spend worth 15K IHG points?

Meanwhile the free night at any Intercontinental is worth the annual fee alone so I guess it's not a big deal. But if they were already offering something I would have asked for something else. :)

guess i didn't explain the circumstances.
 - i already got the annual free night on the card.
 - i want to cancel the card so i can start the clock again and re-apply for it again in 18-24 months.
 - $5k spend is not an issue for me, especially as i have no signup bonuses to hit right now.
 - 15K points are valued at $105, so doesn't seem too bad, especially on a card with $49 annual fee.

as to asking something else, they didn't offer anything else lol. not even to refund the annual fee, which would be less than $15K points. weird.

The point is that even without thresholds, you could do that spend on a different card.

Just because they sell 15K points for $105 doesn't mean they're worth $105.
Besides that they have sold them several times for less than that.

And $5K spend on SPG would earn 5K SPG which I value at more than $105, without any retention bonuses.
Or better yet open new cards to get much bigger bonuses!

That's a suckers offer they gave you IMHO.  I'd HUCA.

Dan, i will respectfully disagree for the following reasons:
- don't have any active SPG cards at this moment (i know i'm gonna take some heat for that one, but i just cancelled all personal SPG cards to restart the clock, and am waiting on a good plat / gold business offer to do an amex business churn including biz SPG).
- the proper comparison here is 20K IHG vs 5K SPG (assuming i had an SPG), but i don't, so i would have to compare it to either MR or UR. so basically, 5K MR or UR vs $140, translating to 2.8CPP.

in my experience, neither MRs or URs are worth that much.

but more than anything, i just havent saw a retention offer reported on IHG, so was very surprised. was just planning on closing the card without anything.

your a funny guy ::)--what is so hard about asking a merchant to split the payment 2x --or when u make a small purchase use the card -- but -- to each his own -- go spend the 5k and be happy ::)
