I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

I just called to cancel my AMEX Gold and Platinum cards as they both had annual fees due. The Gold they didn't offer anything for, I cancelled. The platinum they offered me 20,000 MR points to keep it active which I took, they also registered me for an additional $100 off AA and US Airways incidentals on top of the usual $200.

Doesn't it ruin your credit to close cards? I'm due for the business gold card annual fee also, but am trying to decide what is the best card to transfer the credit to that will net me the most points? Can anyone suggest a good business charge card, or should I jut close the card like he did?

I'm not sure about affecting your credit, but there's no credit line to transfer, the gold card is a charge card which has no CL.

Correct, I confirmed that with the rep before I cancelled.

So there's nothing to lose by just closing the card? Will it still show on my credit report?

I am not well versed enough to say anything with certainty but Dan has some lengthy posts about it where he says he has closed many cards and still maintains a great credit score.

This card has never been reported to your credit report to begin with, as it's a business card.
So closing it will change nothing.

It won't affect his credit as its a bit card, and but I thought that personal charge cards do show up with a cl of the highest balance you've had.

What does highest balance have to do with this? @Centro was just saying that there isn't any CREDIT LINE to transfer before closing since it's a charge card.

There is no line to transfer, however fur personal charge cards they are on your credit report with a limit equal to the highest statement balance you have had. Business cards are not on the report at all.

Today I called to cancel my AmEx platinum after hitting $450 AF and haven been offered 50k MR points and $100 AA incidentals to keep the a/c open. This is the only and  first a/c I have with AmEx.  I have already got $200 through PGGM for this year.

Can I go ahead take the 50k offer ? or can I negotiate for any other offers? Thanks.

Did you do a lot of spending on it?

Did the annual fee post already ?
I tried a few times and they are not giving me points or credits.
