Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Data Point:

IB - $95 credit 1st try with over $50k worth of MS and normal spend (but mostly MS  ;D)

Citi AA Plat - Standard retention: $95 credit after $95 spend + 1 extra AA per $1 for spending $1k every month for 16 months.  2nd try and $1k+ spend/monthly just for the same promo from last year.

I'd also like to note that during the 1st and 2nd try, it seemed like CS was going by a script.  When they ask you if you are looking to cancel your card, and you say no, but..., they then would somehow not have any promotions for you.  They also would say that the retention department is only available if you want to cancel your card and "it would likely be canceled immediately.  haha But on my HUCA, when the same thing happened, I said, "I'm thinking about canceling or how do I cancel and how does it work, that's when miraculously, retention promos came out.  The 2nd CS was somewhat hinting that you have to ask this question for me to access retention bonuses.

Retention means just that . They are offering you a bonus because you are considering closing card , not because you are handsome .
IIRC Almost all CC issuers want you to use the words " I am considering closing " and some will repeat
and ask you to agree on the recorded line that you accept the terms and will not be closing
the card .

You have to say you are " considering " closing . Not intent on ! Then ask for retention dept
if they don't automatically transfer you .

I usually say I want to cancel and then they are required to ask why. So I say af... can I get some kind of retention to offset the fee. If they say no, hang up

So say you want to cancel
+1
It's no big deal say you want to, but just don't actually cancel.

Just closed my dad's Ink Plus. 4th or 5th call. CSR checked for offers, none available, canceled without drama. Points transferred to my mom's account.

When I called to close my account, I got retention offer $95 on first try. I have less spend than my dad's card, and all of my spend is 5x, very little of his is 5x. Not sure why I got offer and he didn't.

It seems there's no rhyme or reason why one gets & the next one doesn't.

There has got to be some sort of algorithm they use. It makes no sense for it to be random.
