Topic Wiki

I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

How much did you spend this past year? I just had the AF hit on mine and my wife's card. Wondering what to expect...

Got $95 statement credit for my Ink ($30k+ spend in past year) and nothing for DW's (under ~$7k spend in past year). Probably will try again at some point.

Aviator Silver - - big fat NOTHING. "There is no retention offer on yoir account. We dont control these offers." HUCA'd nothing doing. Gonna downgrade after i get my GE. When is it too late for AF refund on downgrade?
Fair warning - Any PMs sent in response to forum posts are fair game for ridicule in public.

On with cs for ink plus now and rep is telling me that since January 2015 the only way to get a retention bonus is if you request to have the account closed and when they hit the button to actually close it a retention offer can pop up to try to get you to stay, but if no offer pops up then the account is closed. Any possible truth to this?

That's what I figured but she claims that's how it always works when she closes accounts. I don't see why she would lie, and I don't understand how she could be making a mistake. Then again, there have been plenty of reports of retention offers here and I doubt that most of us getting these offers are committing to closing the card just like that.

What she probably means is that she hits to cancel and then right before a confirmation (are u sure u want to cancel?), the retention offers pop up.

Doubt that's the case either. When I just called for mine earlier today, I told her straight up that I'm thinking of closing but wondering if they will offer anything in terms of retention. She came back with an offer to waive the AF, and since she seemed very nice and helpful, I asked her to check if my wife is eligible for the same offer. Gave her the account number, she checked, and no dice. Doubt she went ahead and clicked cancel if all I asked for was for her to see if my wife is eligible.

Come to think of it I have had a similar situation too. I guess I'm wrong and we are back to:

Could be, but she might not be the sharpest tool in the shed.... Lots of times people make things up based on total nonsense.

How much spending do you do on the card?
