I'm trying to summarize success stories mentioned in this thread.
From @TC610
It never hurts to ask - retention is a big YMMV.  If you don't like the offer given to you when you call for retention, ask for a better one.  Scan through the thread (use the search bar - reading through 130+ pages of posts can be time consuming) to see what others have been offered. Please post what you've got if its better then whats in the WIKI

Called about the AF on the aviator card (3rd year in a row, i think) and was immediately waived. Also got a 5K bonus offer for $1,000 spend.

Once i was in the mood i called regarding my SPG card which i paid a AF on about 5 months ago and they offered me 7K for $1,000 spend.

I downgraded from the Amex Everyday Preferred to the regular Everyday about a week after the annual fee posted. It took until the next statement post date to get the credit and I just looked and they only gave me a credit of $87.08 or 11/12 of the $95 fee. I thought we still had 30 days to cancel or downgrade to recover the full fee. Is that not true?

I just called Amex and they said that they prorate for downgrades and only offer a full refund for a cancellation within 30 days. I didn't realize that the policy varied for cancellations and downgrades. Oh well, I'll survive the $8 hit.

Just ask if there's any retention offers on your account, if there's anything he can offer you..
